Thimphu sits at around 2,300 metres above sea level in a Himalayan valley, and that altitude shapes everything about how the city feels across the year. Winters are cold. Nights in January and December regularly dip to -2°C (28°F) or lower. Days stay pleasantly mild. The skies are typically a hard, clear blue that makes the surrounding peaks look almost theatrical. It is a climate driven by altitude as much as latitude, which catches some visitors off guard: the map says subtropical Asia. But the air says something closer to alpine Europe. The year splits fairly cleanly into four phases. From roughly November through February, Thimphu is dry and cold: almost no rain, sharp nights, and daytime highs that rarely push past 16°C (61°F). Spring arrives tentatively in March and builds through May, bringing warmer afternoons and the first rains as the atmosphere shifts. Then the South Asian monsoon rolls in, peaking through July and August when Thimphu sees over 150mm of rain in a single month. By October the monsoon has retreated, leaving behind freshly washed air and what most travelers consider the city's most photogenic weeks. That October-November window is peak season for good reason. One thing worth noting: humidity hovers around 70% more or less year-round, which means even the dry-winter months do not have the parched, cracked quality you get at altitude elsewhere in Asia. Cold it gets; desert-dry it does not. And the monsoon, while heavy, tends to arrive in sustained downpours rather than all-day drizzle, so a morning of soaking rain in July does not necessarily mean the afternoon is lost.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
October and November are the months most travelers target, and the reasoning holds up. Festival season, including Thimphu's own major tshechu, tends to cluster in autumn. Skies are reliably clear. Daytime temperatures in the low 20s°C (low 70s°F) make walking around the old town and the Tashichho Dzong comfortable for hours at a stretch. March and April are a solid second choice: fewer crowds, rhododendrons in bloom across the hillsides, and the same pleasant temperatures before the monsoon arrives.
Adventure
October is the sweet spot: trails above Thimphu are dry, air is clear enough to see deep into the high Himalaya, and leeches, a genuine feature of the wet months on forest paths, are nowhere to be found. May works too for travelers who want spring wildflowers and can live with the possibility of afternoon showers at elevation.
Budget
Budget-conscious travelers will find the monsoon months of July and August the leanest season. Accommodation and tour rates typically soften when demand drops, and while the rain is persistent, Thimphu remains fully functional and has its own atmospheric quality under low cloud. For visitors after relaxation and comfortable weather without the crowds of peak season, late October into early November strikes the best balance: clear skies, cool but not cold afternoons, and the festival energy just beginning to thin.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Thimphu.

Year-Round Essentials
layers
The temperature swing between a January night at -2°C (28°F) and a July afternoon at 27°C (81°F) is significant, and even within a single autumn or spring day you might cycle through jacket-on and jacket-off more than once.
a mid-weight fleece or insulated layer
earns its place in every season except the height of July and August.
good walking shoes or light hiking boots
matter more here than in most cities. Thimphu's most rewarding sights involve meaningful walking and uneven terrain, and the cobblestones near the dzong get slippery when wet.
sun protection
is essential year-round; at this altitude UV intensity is considerably higher than the temperature might suggest, and the clear winter and autumn skies are deceptive in that regard.
a reusable water bottle
is practical on uphill walks
a small daypack large enough to carry layers and rain gear
tends to be more useful than a shoulder bag for navigating the terrain.
winter
Clothing
a proper warm coat beyond just a fleece, thermal base layers, warm socks, gloves for evenings and mornings
Footwear
waterproof boots
spring
Clothing
a mid-weight jacket, a packable rain layer, breathable hiking trousers
monsoon
Clothing
a waterproof jacket that breathes, quick-dry clothing
autumn
Layering Tip
the same layering approach as spring. But with a slightly warmer emphasis. Evenings cool fast in October. By November you are back in jacket territory after dark.
Plug Type
Type D and Type F
Voltage
230 volts and 50 hertz
Adapter Note
Travelers from North America will need both a voltage adapter and a plug converter. Travelers from Europe and much of Asia will likely need only a plug adapter, if that. A universal travel adapter is worth bringing since older guesthouses in Thimphu sometimes have a mix of socket types.
