Transportation in Thimphu

Thimphu's transport scene is refreshingly compact: shared taxis dominate, running set routes between the core districts for a fraction of what a private cab costs. Locals flag them down on the main thoroughfares. Tourists typically grab a hotel-arranged private taxi for door-to-door convenience. Walking is practical within the city bowl. But the hills are steeper than they look, budget for the occasional taxi even if you're fit. From Paro International Airport, the 90-minute ride into Thimphu is a splurge option, book through the official taxi counter landside, not the freelance drivers who swarm baggage claim. Shared vehicles are theoretically available at the highway junction outside the airport gate. But with luggage and no Dzongkha it's simpler to pre-arrange pickup. Once in town, resist the instinct to hire a car. Parking is scarce and one-way streets are poorly signed.
